Health Alert: Beware of Bogus Claims from Hand Sanitizer Manufactures. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that some companies may be selling hand sanitizers with unproven claims such as extended protection from pathogens (24 hours or ten hand washes, for example). Regulators from the FDA note, “These types of claims may put consumers at risk by leading to a false sense of security and resulting in infrequent hand-washing or hand sanitizing. The agency urges consumers to be vigilant of products sold with misleading, unproven claims, by following our updates on our website.” Food and Drug Administration, April 2020 Diet: Pickled Veggies, Salted Fish, and Stomach Cancer. Using data from two South Korean cohort studies, researchers estimate that a high intake of either pickled vegetables or salted fish is associated with ~15% increased risk for gastric cancer. Cancers, April 2020 Exercise: Poor Fitness May Affect Grades… An analysis of data collected from students at three universities found that low fitness is associated with an elevated risk for poor academic performance. Journal of American College Health, May 2020 Chiropractic: Weaker Core Muscles Common with Chronic Back Pain. Among a group of 278 individuals, researchers observed that those with chronic back pain tended to have worse lumbopelvic motor control than participants without a history of back pain. Doctors of chiropractic often manage chronic back pain patients with a combination of spinal manipulation, mobilization, and specific exercise recommendations to reduce pain and restore function in the lower back. Medicine, April 2020 Mental Attitude: Depression Affects Mood Regulation. Mood homeostasis is a behavior in which one attempts to stabilize their mood through activity choices. A study involving over 58,000 adults revealed that mood homeostasis is impaired in individuals with depression. The findings suggest that therapy to support mood regulation may benefit those with a history of depression. JAMA Psychiatry, April 2020 Wellness/Prevention: Signs of Sleep Apnea. Sleep apnea is associated with an elevated risk for several serious conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, liver problems, and dementia. Commons signs of sleep apnea include the following: loud snoring, sleepiness or lack of energy during the day , waking up with a very sore or dry throat, recurrent awakenings, occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation, forgetfulness, a restless sleep, morning headaches, reduced interest in sexual activity, and mood changes. If you are experiencing these symptoms, contact your doctor to discuss testing and treatment.
